Early Partnership Saves Millions
Expedite joined the Southern Cross project early in the process to complete a detailed feasibility and business case. This allowed the team to identify the most critical and urgent works and shape a staged construction plan with life safety as priority.
Because of this early involvement, we had time to collaborate with engineering specialists, which led to a reimagined seismic bracing design – something that would enable Southern Cross to realise substantial savings (without compromising structural resilience).
Seamless Integration Between Facilities
The next challenge was physically connecting two complex buildings across an active hospital site. This stage of the project started with in-depth health planning to maximise the space in both facilities. It was determined that a link bridge was the best option.
Rather than building everything on-site, Expedite fabricated the bridge and lift shaft off-site. Components arrived ready to install, and within days, the structures were lifted into position. This approach allowed the hospital to remain operational, even during the short, on-site construction phase.

Expedite completed an upgrade of Southern Cross’s Wellington Hospital, including refurbishment of Theatre 6, expansion of CSSD, seismic strengthening of the existing structure, and installation of the new link bridge.
